What is British Citizenship?

British citizenship is full membership of the United Kingdom, providing:

  • British passport – visa-free travel to 180+ countries
  • Right to vote in all UK elections
  • Right to live and work in UK permanently with no restrictions
  • Access to all public services and benefits
  • Consular protection abroad from British embassies
  • Pass citizenship to children born outside UK
  • Dual citizenship permitted – you can keep your original nationality (check your country’s rules)

Once British, you cannot be deported or removed from the UK.

Pathways to British Citizenship

  • Born in UK but not automatically British (parent wasn’t British/settled at birth)

  • Parent has since become British or settled

  • Child adopted by British citizen

Note: British citizenship by descent is usually automatic, but you may need to apply for a British passport to confirm it.
